Remembered for His Heart, Humor, and Dedication
Before joining Cleveland’s police academy, Cortez spent nearly three years with the Reservoir Police Department in Mississippi. Though his time there was brief, the impact he left behind was lasting.
“Even when assigned to our Marine Division — a tough and demanding post — Cortez never once complained,” said Chief Carlos Dipuma in a statement to PEOPLE. “His positive attitude, work ethic, and kindness made him an all-around great guy and an even better officer.”
“Cortez truly loved people and was passionate about serving his community. His untimely passing has left us all deeply saddened, but we will forever remember the joy, laughter, and dedication he brought to our department,” Dipuma continued. “Rest easy, Cortez. You will always be part of the Reservoir Police family. We’ve got the watch from here.”
Others who worked closely with him remembered him as a source of laughter and light.
“This one is so hard,” wrote a woman who identified herself as Cortez’s former supervisor in a Facebook tribute. “This tall, goofy, headache of a boy kept us all laughing and up all night knowing he was working night shift. He was so fun to supervise, never knew what you were gonna wake up to headed into work.”
She added, “Hated to see him leave Rez, but knew he was meant for more out there.”
A Life Cut Short, A Legacy That Endures
Cortez Smith died in pursuit of a dream — one rooted in public service, justice, and community connection. Though his journey ended far too soon, the stories shared by those who knew him paint the picture of a young man who lived with heart, humor, and unwavering purpose.
His memory now lives on in two cities: the one where he served, and the one he came home to serve.
