At just 12 years old, Rowan Rieve has already faced more than most do in a lifetime. First diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor called medulloblastoma at age eight, the metro Atlanta local has endured surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy—even having to relearn the basics of walking and talking.
Despite being diagnosed with additional tumors and Li Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS)—a rare genetic condition that hinders the body’s ability to suppress tumor growth—Rowan’s focus remained on others.
From a Small Stand to a Massive Impact
Driven by the news of federal budget cuts to brain tumor research, Rowan and his friends set up a modest lemonade and tea stand. They raised exactly $22.25, which Rowan proudly brought to his next medical appointment.
“I felt that the hospital needed [the money], I guess, more than I did,” Rowan told CBS affiliate WSB.
That small, selfless gesture resonated far beyond his neighborhood. After hearing Rowan’s story, an anonymous donor was so moved that they contributed over $100,000 to the cause.
A Legacy of Giving
Rowan’s parents, Charlan and Bob Rieve, expressed their pride in their son’s perspective, noting that he chose to support those dedicated to “eradicating cancer in kids.” Through the support of organizations like Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) and CURE Childhood Cancer, Rowan’s $22 contribution has blossomed into a significant windfall for life-saving research.

Rowan’s neuro-oncologist, Dr. Tobey MacDonald, was the first to be moved by the gesture. After mentioning to Rowan’s mother that national funding for pediatric brain tumor research had been slashed, he was stunned when his young patient immediately stepped up to help.
“This tells you of the unselfish and truly giving nature of this young man fighting for his own life,” MacDonald stated. “He never complains about the treatments… That is Rowan.”
A Viral Wave of Hope
Dr. MacDonald’s decision to share the story sparked a global chain reaction. The specific figure of $22.25 became a rallying cry, with donors everywhere contributing that exact amount in Rowan’s honor. This momentum culminated in a staggering $100,000 anonymous gift.
For Dr. MacDonald, Rowan’s spirit is a reminder of why he entered the field of pediatric oncology: to witness the unimaginable resilience and “light” that children provide even in their darkest moments.
A “Sweet, Smart, and Kind” Warrior
Rowan’s parents, Charlan and Bob Rieve, have spent four years watching their son fight a “war on cancer.” While they continue to pray for his long-term healing, they find themselves humbled by the man he is becoming.
